Coaching Exercise - The Circle of Concern Vs. The Circle of Influence

So many concerns to manage, yet are you clear on what you can actually influence and how to do so?

The circle of concern identifies a wide variety of life concerns in general, many of which we have no influence over. The size of this circle can often feel overwhelming. Our circle of influence however, relates to aspects in our lives that cause concern but focuses on what we actually have control of. There is a noticeable difference in size of this circle once you recognise what’s within your control. For example; the weather may be a concern, but we have no influence over this.

Understanding the differences between the two and identifying how you can have an influence on your circle is the key to taking control and enabling you to map out your action plan.

With that in mind,  ask yourself what concerns you and what is within your control? Try these basic steps as a starting point…

  • Draw your first circle and list your concerns

  • Draw your second circle and include only the things you have an influence over (what is within your control)

  • Prioritise the most important areas within your circle of influence - What would you like ot influence first?

  • What is the first step you can take to influence and control these?

  • Map out your plan by identifying 3 basic steps as a starting point.

  • Recognise the choices you have and get clear on what decisions will you make.

It’s important you demonstrate honesty and bravery with yourself. Remember, it’s a step by step process, don’t feel overwhelmed, just focus on one step at a time. Commit to taking your first action and track your progress throughout. Recognise any barriers that arise and remember your coping strategy. Consider who will keep you accountabile in this process, perhaps a friend or family member can keep on top you. Looking for more professional support along the way?
